Academic
Mentoring Program (AMP) was launched on February 2011. It was initiated by a group of
dedicated students of Albukhary International University which aims to empower
Albukhary orphans at Albukhary Residence in their knowledge seeking and
education. It started small, and this small group of students of AIU called
themselves as mentors. They conducted 2 hours per day, four days per week
mentoring programmes to help the kids in their academics. These mentors
facilitated and explained their mentees on subtopics they did not understand as
well as helped them to prepare for their examination.
In
2012 with a new branding name known as AIU Educational Team (AIUeduTeam), this
academic-driven organisation had attracted almost 40 enthusiastic students of
AIU to be on board. At the moment, the club has 54 members. With a convincing
capacity and ability of manpower on board, AMP expanded its coverage to not
only mentoring the academics performance of the orphans but also offered their
mentoring skills to the primary and secondary school children living in nearby
area. It remarked a significant moment for the club where it had been operated
almost 24-7 tasks to coordinate the program and to make sure all 180 students
received equal facilitation.
Several
in-house training to the mentors had taken place inside and outside campus to
prepare these mentors with thinking, mentoring and pedagogy skills. In October
2012, AIU Educational Team managed to organize a one-day Academic Seminar for
English and Mathematics subjects to 80 SPM candidates from nearby schools. In
November 2012, the club successfully engaged with Teach for Malaysia (TfM) and
entertained a two-day educational visit of 75 students from Negeri Sembilan to
AIU.
For
the past 2 years of operation, AMP received many constructive feedbacks from
parents, collaborators as well as AIU management. Indeed these feedbacks were
really helpful in making sure the survival of AMP.
Precisely,
year 2013 will mark another history to AMP as some changes for betterment will
be implemented.
